In an amazing development this Wednesday, an anchor who works for the state-owned television network, Russia Today, announced her resignation while live on air.

Liz Wahl, who is an American and a member of the network’s D.C. bureau, said she could no longer be “part of a network that whitewashes the actions of Putin.”

While making her comments, Wahl said she is the grandchild of Hungarian refugees who fled Soviet oppression, citing that as one of the reasons for her moral conflict from working at the station.

This comes as RT faces mounting criticism for being a propaganda wing for Putin. The network’s coverage of the civil war in Syria has been overwhelmingly pro-Assad, and it’s coverage of Russia’s “anti-gay propaganda laws” has been called laughable by most critics.

Another RT anchor, Abby Martin, spoke out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine during a broadcast this Monday. But the scale of dissent from this latest development is sure to rock the network, calling into question its ability to project legitimacy as a news source.
